Tobacco free does not mean nicotine free. That single misunderstanding sends more people to the wrong product than anything else in this category. What disappears is the tobacco leaf. The nicotine stays exactly where it was.
What tobacco free actually removes
In a traditional snus pouch the filling is ground tobacco, and the nicotine comes out of that plant material. In a tobacco free pouch the filling is plant fibre, usually cellulose based, and the nicotine is added separately.
So the carrier changes and the nicotine does not. Everything you associate with tobacco in your mouth goes with the leaf: the brown colour, the earthy base note, the residue on the gum.
What is left is a white pouch whose taste comes entirely from the flavouring.

How to tell a tobacco free pouch from a tobacco one
Easiest is the colour. Tobacco pouches are brownish, tobacco free ones are bright white. That is where the shelf name All White comes from.
The tin says it too. Manufacturers label tobacco free products clearly, because it is a selling point. On an ALP tin it says Nicotine Pouches, and the ingredient list on each product page shows plant fibre rather than tobacco.
If neither helps, the ingredient list decides. Tobacco appears there under its own name. There is no hidden wording for it.
What changes in daily use
Three things show up quickly.
Staining. Tobacco pouches discolour the gum and the pouch material over time. Tobacco free ones do so noticeably less.
Taste. Without tobacco there is no earthy base note sitting underneath everything else. Mint tastes of mint, fruit tastes of fruit, and a weak flavour has nowhere to hide.
Format. Tobacco free pouches are usually slimmer and flatter, because the filling needs less volume. They sit less visibly under the lip.
| Traditional snus | Tobacco free pouches | |
|---|---|---|
| Filling | Ground tobacco | Plant fibre |
| Nicotine | From the tobacco | Added separately |
| Colour | Brown | White |
| Taste | Tobacco plus flavouring | Flavouring only |
| Staining | Pronounced | Low |
The real problem is not the tobacco, it is dryness
People switching to tobacco free pouches usually trip over something other than the missing leaf. They trip over dry pouches.
Plenty of All White products are filled very dry, because dry stores longer and ships more easily. The price you pay is a pouch that feels rough going in, takes minutes to give up any flavour and goes flat early. If your first tobacco free tin was like that, the category is not the problem. That tin was.
ALP fills deliberately moist. Flavour arrives sooner and holds across the time the pouch is in, and the pouch stays comfortable instead of turning scratchy halfway through.
What tobacco free changes
- Stays
- Nicotine, the format, where it sits, how long it lasts.
- Goes
- Tobacco leaf, the brown colour, the earthy taste.
- Does not follow automatically
- Moisture. That is a decision each manufacturer makes.
- ALP range
- Tobacco free throughout, 6mg, 12mg and 18mg, 20 pouches per tin.
Does tobacco free mean weaker
No. The strength depends on how much nicotine goes into the pouch, not on what carries it. Tobacco free tins run from very mild to very strong, exactly like tobacco ones.
At ALP the choice is 6mg, 12mg or 18mg per pouch. 6mg is the entry point, 12mg the everyday figure for most people, 18mg the strongest in the range and not a starting point. There is more on how those numbers behave on our page about nicotine pouches.
Why Switzerland has both on the shelf
Real tobacco snus is available in Switzerland, unlike in most EU countries. That is why the word snus here covers two quite different products, and why the label is worth reading rather than guessing.
If you want the format without the leaf, tobacco free is the specific thing you are looking for, not simply anything labelled snus.
For adults 18 and over
Tobacco free pouches contain nicotine, and nicotine is highly addictive. They are intended for adults who already use nicotine. If you do not use nicotine today, this is not a good place to start.
The ALP range
Every ALP flavour is tobacco free, in mint and fruit directions and in three strengths. The full line-up is in our nicotine pouch overview, the fruit side sits in the Fruit Line, and several flavours at once come in the bundles.
